WHAT IS BEATING?
Beating is a crucial part of any shoot. Its purpose is to increase the chances of a successful shoot by flushing out the birds and driving them towards the guns.
Beaters work as part of a well-organised team, usually led by the gamekeeper or shoot captain through woodland or game cover crops flushing the game in the desired direction. In order to do this, beaters make noise by clapping loudly or using their voice disturbing the vegetation to flush out the birds. They may also use a stick to beat bushes and tap to push birds forward. Beaters will also use flags to try to move the birds to fly in the right direction. The beating line needs to move in formation at the right pace; if they go too fast, the gamebirds will disperse all at once giving the guns little time to shoot the birds. Experienced beaters will often have trained dogs with them.
Beaters may be given radios to communicate with different groups on a shoot or to report on stages of a drive. Good organisation and communication are essential for a fruitful shoot.

GET A GREAT COAT
You can wear a smart pair of jeans but we recommend chinos or, if it's a warm day, summer shorts. Again, you'll want to avoid something too tight-fitting for each of movement and, if you're caught in a sudden downpour, jeans will take time to dry and feel particcularly uncomfortable.
